the beautiful Canadian fallscape with its incredible range of changing colours from bright yellow through orange to flurescent red. Its wood is one of the hardest and densest of the maples, and is often used in furniture, tools, flooring - for bowling alleys and very often in NBA basketball courts. Another importance of the sugar maple is that it is a major source of maple syrup production in Canada. Its high sugar content makes it the best tree to take sap from. Maple syrup was first collected by the native people in the Algonquin region. They call it "sinzibuckwud", meaning "drawn from wood". Maple syrup is not only good flavour, but also a source of energy and nutrition for the people. Using a tomahawk, which is a "V" shape tool that cuts into the tree, syrup was collected into buckets and then boiled to purify the contents. This process is now mechanicalized and streamlined today for mass production. Canada produces more than 80% of the world's maple syrup, out of which 75% was produced in Quebec. The beautiful leaves, valuable wood, delicious syrup of the sugar maple made it the best known and most important tree in Canada. |
